The Mississippi State Hospital (MSH) is a publicly funded psychiatric hospital of the Mississippi Department of Mental Health and is accredited by the Joint Commission. The broad array of psychiatric services provided at MSH provides residents with a rich, unique learning environment. Services include Adult Acute Psychiatric Services, Continued Treatment Psychiatric Services, Forensic Psychiatric Services, Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Services, and Addiction Services.

Jaquith Nursing Home, a fully licensed nursing home, and Whitfield Medical-Surgical Hospital (WMSH), a JC and CMS certified medical hospital, are located on the 350-acre campus of MSH. WMSH provides electroconvulsive therapy, laboratory and radiology services, along with optometry, podiatry, neurology and family medicine clinics.

Mississippi State Hospital has emerged as a premiere training site for multiple disciplines. The Behavioral Health Services division hosts its own psychology internship and post-doctoral fellowship for psychologists and licensed professional counselors. The recreation therapy division offers internships for bachelor level students completing degrees in therapeutic recreation attending Jackson State University and the University of Southern Mississippi. The robust social services department provides internships for bachelor and master degree level students completing degrees in social work at various universities across the state. The nursing services division schedules psychiatric nursing clinical rotations for associate and bachelor level nursing students affiliated with various programs including University of Mississippi Medical Center, Holmes Community College, Hinds Community College, and Delta State University.
